From the forest to the farm to our hives and grassland – The Yale Landscape Lab offers opportunities for the next generation of landscape-shifting ideas to be tested in a lab context replicating real world conditions. With the soil as floor and the sky as ceiling, we create environments where experimentation is encouraged, and where potential failure is embraced as a necessary step to cultivating an ethic of innovation and sustainability.
At the Yale Landscape Lab, we aim to create spaces and educational programming that push the boundaries on how the natural environment of a liberal arts university can be used for research, teaching, learning, and community engagement.
YLL supports students, faculty, and partner Centers in their use of the natural environment at the 136 acre Yale West Campus for siting and structuring research settings. We bring an understanding of the diversity of the ecosystems at West Campus, and a willingness to help create specific conditions.
Longterm Studies: YLL works with campus partners to create the space and the needed support structures to test hypotheses, devices, and education models at scale in real world settings. Occasionally, YLL produces substrates and inputs for partner studies across Yale.
Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Providing at-scale space for these efforts is key to proving concepts and iterating towards a final product. Be in touch if you would like to connect about your idea.
Teaching and Learning
We promote experiential teaching methods by providing faculty and students with unique natural outdoor environments in which ideas from the classroom can be made tangible and real.
Outdoor Classroom: Faculty, students, and partners use the Lab as an outdoor classroom in a variety of ways, from observational field trips to hands-on engagement. Complementarily, the barn itself often serves as a hub for course visits to YLL. Amongst the swirl and energy of the academic year, the relative calm of the barn often serves as a site for focused conversation.
Internship Program: The Landscape Lab offers a robust internship program to students from across Yale to learn through hands-on practice. Positions are available and posted before the beginning of every academic year. Beyond being stewards and managers of YLL’s spaces, YLL interns are charged with bringing their own visions for the world to the Lab — they design and run many of the Lab’s volunteer sessions and workshops.
The Landscape Lab offers events, workshops and volunteer sessions throughout both the academic year and the summer for the Yale and wider communities. These vary widely in focus - but unless specified otherwise, are suited for beginners and experts alike.
